Dr. Stuart Chapman Hill is a composer, conductor ane educator who is based in St. Louis, Missouri. He is the artistic director of CHARIS, the St. Louis Women’s Chorus, and is additionally an associate professor of music and Webster University’s director of musical instruction.
Dr. Hill earned his doctorate in music education from Michigan State University, where he also studied choral conducting, taught courses in music foundations, and songwriting leading up to joining the Webster faculty. He was awarded the Excellence-in-Teaching Citation at Michigan State, a university-wide honor presented each year to six graduate students in recognition for their achievements in the undergraduate classroom. For the purpose of helping to inform the classroom practice of music educators who teach songwriting in formal contexts, he used ethnographic approaches to explore the teaching and learning practices of professional songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee.
Music teacher identity and music education philosophy are some of his other academic interests. Vanderbilt University awarded Dr. Hill degrees in both music and education. In Greensboro, North Carolina, he taught chorus to middle school students before going back to graduate school. He also served as a faculty member at the North Carolina Governor’s School working with high school students.
