James E. Green, Co-Editor
James E. Green proudly celebrates his Cherokee heritage, inspired by his late grandmother Beatrice Banks Brodie, a Cherokee. He collaborates with the Cherokee National Youth Chorus, creating music in the Cherokee language, keeping the language alive through song. Although his ancestors were recorded as “black” on the 1880 census, making him ineligible for Cherokee Nation citizenship, James honors his Native American roots through his work, keeping his grandmother’s legacy alive.
James E. Green is a composer and has created music for bands and dancing ensembles in addition to vocal ensembles. He serves as an advisor to the Board of Directors for the Durham Children’s Choir and is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. From kindergarten to college students, James guest conducts and gives talks on composition, wind instruments, and the music industry.
Mary Young, Co-Editor
Dr. Mary Young, a conductor and pianist from Rochester, New York, specializes in Native American choral music, working closely with Native composers and languages. As co-editor of the Native American Choral Series with Hinshaw Music, she founded the First Nations Choral Festival, showcasing exclusively Native American music in all-Native languages. Dr. Young serves as Director of Music and Worship Arts at Saint Paul United Methodist Church and Adjunct Professor of Music at Concordia University, Nebraska. Her research focuses on underrepresented composers, and she’s updated lists of non-idiomatic choral music by Black composers.
