Who is Saint Francis of Assisi?

St. Francis of Assisi, Italian friar, resided in Italy in the 13th century. He was committed to Christian charity and led a life of asceticism and deprivation. He is recognized for his work with the downtrodden and the destitute, his concern for the the natural world and wildlife, and for founding the Franciscan order. He lived his life as a wealthy and comfortable son of a prosperous merchant, until God made use of a chance encounter with a a social outcast to transform St. Francis’ perspective on life. Because he his heart was changed and he loved all living things, it is said he even preached to the birds, St. Francis was named the patron saint of the environment and animals.
