About Dr. Michael Cox

Dr. Michael Cox is an ASCAP award-winning composer, conductor, pianist, educator, music copyist, and engraver. He currently serves as Composer-in-Residence at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dr. Cox retired in 2009 as Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he had served on the faculty since 1990. Before joining Southwestern, he taught conducting, composition, and music theory at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

A prolific composer, Dr. Cox has hundreds of published works spanning choral, piano, orchestral, and instrumental music. He has received an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers each year since 1987 and continues to receive numerous commissions for choral and instrumental church music. He was also selected as the commissioned composer for the Texas Music Teachers Association Conference.

Dr. Cox has extensive experience in both choral and orchestral conducting. For 13 years, he directed the Bison Glee Club at Oklahoma Baptist University and conducted the university’s annual Concerto-Aria Competition, featuring student performers accompanied by members of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also traveled throughout the country as a clinician and guest conductor.

Since moving to Fort Worth, Dr. Cox has served as guest conductor for the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra and the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving. He also directed the Southwestern Seminary Men’s Chorus.

Dr. Cox earned a Bachelor of Music with honors in piano performance from Oklahoma Baptist University, a Master of Music in orchestral conducting from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Music in composition from Florida State University.
