A wordless vocal composed for the 2021 Western Michigan University New York Voices Vocal Jazz Camp, “Spirit” captures the resilience of the human spirit in musical form. A contemplative beginning gives way to the kick drum’s heartbeat, lifting the piece off the ground. From there “Spirit” soars gently into a dance of harmony, counterpoint and rhythm.
