Dr. André J. Thomas, retired but actively engaged, serves as a Visiting Professor of Conducting and Interim Conductor of the Yale Camerata at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale School of Music. Previously, he held the position of Emeritus Professor of Music at Florida State University, where he was the Owen F. Sellers Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities, and professor of Choral Music Education. Dr. Thomas earned his degrees from Friends University (B.A.), Northwestern University (M.M.), and the University of Illinois (D.M.A.).
Renowned internationally, Dr. Thomas is sought after as a choral adjudicator, clinician, and conductor of Honor/All-State Choirs across six continents. He emphasizes creating a supportive learning environment that encourages students to achieve their full potential through structured challenges and individualized instruction. His teaching philosophy focuses on fostering student independence and a deep appreciation for the subject matter.
In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Thomas continues to lead workshops, guest lecture at universities, and conduct professional choral organizations worldwide. His illustrious career includes receiving prestigious awards such as the Robert Shaw Award from ACDA and induction into the Florida Music Educators Hall of Fame. As Vice President of National ACDA and artistic Chairman of the 2021 National Convention, he remains at the forefront of advancing choral music education and performance globally.
