Joseph Flummerfelt’s musical journey began in his childhood, inspired by his mother’s organ playing at Family Baptist Church, where he learned hymns by ear, sparking his lifelong passion for music. His interest in conducting was ignited when his family obtained a record player with a copy of Handel’s “Messiah.”

Flummerfelt graduated from DePauw University with a Bachelor of Music, specializing in organ and church music. He continued his education at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, earning a master’s degree in Choral Conducting. Subsequently, he pursued a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Illinois, where he also taught as an Instructor of Choral Music.

His career encompassed diverse roles, including Maestro del Coro at the Festival Dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, and Director of Choral Activities at the Spoleto Festival in South Carolina. For 33 years, Flummerfelt served as the esteemed director of the choral program at Westminster Choir College at Rider University until his retirement in 2007.

As a conductor, Flummerfelt achieved acclaim for his interpretations of major choral works, including notable premieres with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. His performances of Britten’s “War Requiem” and Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem” received critical praise and earned prestigious awards.

Throughout his illustrious career, Flummerfelt received numerous honors, including Grammy Awards and recognition from the New York Times. His contributions to choral music were celebrated internationally, and he was awarded multiple honorary degrees for his outstanding achievements.

Joseph Flummerfelt passed away on March 1, 2019, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a conductor, educator, and champion of choral music, remembered for his profound impact on the musical community worldwide.
