Hal H. Hopson, a Dallas-based composer and church music clinician born in 1933, boasts an impressive catalog of over 1,300 published works encompassing various styles within church music. Renowned for his compositions of congregational hymn-tunes and responsorial psalm settings, Hopson’s pieces are widely included in contemporary hymnals and psalm collections.

Raised in a musical family in Mound, Texas, Hopson began playing for church services at twelve. He received a Royalty-Edwards Scholarship for music at Baylor University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954, followed by a Master of Sacred Music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1956. His academic pursuits extended to Germany’s University of Erlangen, Peabody Conservatory, and Southern Methodist University.

Hopson’s career includes teaching at Westminster Choir College and Scarritt Graduate School, as well as serving various congregations nationwide. His composition “God With Us” was chosen for placement in a time capsule at the Kennedy Center during the American Bicentennial in 1976, to be reopened in 2076.

As an active conductor and clinician, Hopson has led workshops and festivals across North America, Europe, Japan, and Korea. His contributions have earned him recognition in The International Who’s Who in Music and the title of National Patron from Delto Omicron. He remains actively involved in professional organizations such as ASCAP and AGO, contributing to the music community through leadership roles and ongoing artistic endeavors.
